SIN – Who Cares?

SIN – the Fatal Disease

Since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, sin has been passed down through the generations.  But who really cares about sin?  Sin is a disease that affects all of us.  We are born with a sin nature and are “hell-bent” on sinning. Sin - Who Cares? Satan tempting Adam and Eve

Was it always this way?  No.  Before the fall of Adam and Eve, sin wasn’t present in this world.  Mankind was meant to live forever – have eternal life – no death, no toil, no pain, no sorrow, no lack and no need for The Ten Commandments.  God provided everything His creation could ever need or want.

In Genesis chapter 3, we see Adam and Eve tempted and deceived by the serpent (Satan, the devil).  Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  They sinned and everything changed; sin then entered the world.  Because of their sin, an expiration date has been stamped on mankind as well as the animals and everything in this natural world.  In short, SIN results in death.  Certainly Adam and Eve cared about sin the moment they disobeyed God.

Genesis 2:16-17 (NIV) And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”  Not only were Adam and Eve to die physically, but immediately, their peaceful relationship with God was severed.  So, who cares about sin?  We must care about sin!

Deception

God created Lucifer (the angel of light), but Lucifer rebelled against God by wanting to be like God.  Lucifer and a third of the angels, who also rebelled against God, were thrown down from heaven to earth.  Lucifer then became known as Satan (the devil), and the angels who follow him known as demons.  The devil comes to steal, kill and destroy, but Jesus came to give us life – abundant life.

John 10:10 (NIV) The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

“The World”

The expression, “the world” can be used in three ways:

  • creation – the heavens and the earth and the creatures that dwell therein
  • mankind – man and woman and their offspring
  • system – run by Satan

None of these is to be worshipped.  Only our creator, God, is to be worshipped.

The system run by Satan and mankind’s involvement in that “world system” is what makes us think our good deeds will outweigh our sins.  By the world’s standard, we think our reward or wages should be eternity in heaven.  As children, we are taught to be good and Santa Claus will reward us with presents.  If we do well in school, we are rewarded with good grades.  If we do well there, we are rewarded with a good paying job.  That is “the world’s system.”  We have been conditioned to think and live this way.  We think, “Surely, a loving God will send us to heaven because we’ve tried to do our best.”  This is Satan’s deception at work in our minds.  And, sadly, much of the world has swallowed Satan’s big lie.

God is just.  He keeps His word.

God is a loving God, but He will NOT overlook our sins.  God is just.  He demands justice.  He will NOT go back on His word.  This was the case in the Old Testament with Nadab and Abihu, sons of Aaron, the High Priest.  These sons of Aaron served in the Temple, but they did not follow God’s instructions.

Leviticus 10:1-2 (NIV) Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.

Nadab and Abihu did not believe God.  They did not take God at His word.  Also, they were not saved from death because their father was Aaron, the High Priest.  We must each take God at His word and believe Him if we are to be saved.  Romans 6:23 (NIV) For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  The death spoken of here is not only a physical death at some point in time, but a spiritual death (separation from God) and eternal torment in hell.

“The Truth” (Jesus) sets us free from sin.

We cannot buy our way into heaven by doing good deeds, leading a good life, attending synagogue or church, tithing or anything else.  Isaiah 64:6 (NLT) We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind.  Romans 3:27 (NLT) Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith.  Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.  In other words, God rescues us.  We can’t rescue ourselves.

There is no such thing as my truth.  We need to realize that in the end only “The Truth” is what counts.  There are not many ways to heaven, only one way.  The only way to the Father in heaven is through His Son, Jesus Christ. Only Jesus was resurrected from the dead and continues to live.  He is alive and seated at the right hand of God the Father in heaven.  Jesus is the only mediator between God and man because He is both God and man.  Jesus is “The Truth” that sets us free.  He is the judge, the only one who can acquit us from our death sentence of eternal torment in hell.

John 14:6 (NIV) Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Natural Death

God created man in His image.  Man has a body, soul (mind, will, emotions & conscience), and a spirit.  Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.  God created Adam from the dust of the earth.  When man dies, his body decays and it returns to dust.  This is the natural death.  But, what happens to the soul and spirit?

Eternal Spiritual Death or Eternal Spiritual Life – You Choose

Once we die, we do not cease to exist.  Our soul and spirit will reside either in heaven or hell.  What makes the difference? – knowing and trusting God!  It begins with acknowledging we are all sinners in need of a Savior – Jesus, the Messiah.  So, who cares about SIN?  Obviously, we must care about SIN so we can avoid eternal spiritual death (separation from God) and eternal torment.  More important, God cares about SIN.

God is omniscient (all knowing), omnipresent (present everywhere) and omnipotent (all powerful).  God can operate in or out of time and space.  He knows the end from the beginning.  God knew mankind would be deceived by Satan and sin.  Because of this, God had a plan for our salvation which would include His Son, Jesus.

John 3:16 (NKJV) For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
